Plastic is evil and must die!

17 Nov

I can see how it takes more than a 100 years for this stuff to break down - it's impervious to my vengeful puppy teeth!

Today, Riley “helped” Mommy with switching her closets over to her winter wardrobe… by “killing” the completely busted SpaceSaver bags (which, btw, I caution you against believing all of the hype on these – yes, conveniently puts everything in one place, but they are incredibly susceptible to tearing. I suppose the small, flat versions are probably fine, but the cubes are not hardy at all. And, frankly, if you have “too much stuff, not enough space”, perhaps it’s time to cull through all those “never wears” in your closet!). If you ask me, all SpaceSaver bags should be inspected by “#25” (literally, “lbs 25″… Riley the Ripper)! Please note: No animals were harmed during filming. 😉

“He who smelt it…”

16 Nov

Woke himself up by passing gas this afternoon… and then walked to the other side of the room, to sleep next to Mommy (gee, thanks!). Holistic food my foot!

And to think that Daddy wasn’t even here for him to blame.

Bye daddy!

Daddy left for London tonight… and won’t be back until Thursday night – after we leave for grandma’s house. So he’s not going to see Riley until after Thanksgiving!

Great gear

As long as we’re on the subject… I thought it most appropriate to share the cleaning products we use – which are GREAT for soils and odor:

Simple Solution Hardfloor Stain+Odor Remover

Simple Solution Carpet Stain Remover

They have a whole line of cleaners (they even make an ultraviolet spot “spotter”!), but we’ve found that these have been just great for our hardwood floors and rugs for the few instances when we’ve had to use them. No scent, no stain, no problem!

Not great gear

So here’s something that can be over-rated: Pee-pee pads.

A word of advice from our breeder:  you never want the puppy to think that it’s okay to pee or poo in the house. Ever. Once they think it’s okay to do it, it will be very hard to break them of the habit – never mind the unpleasantness you’ll experience of having to clean it, or the damage to your carpets/floors.

I understand that some dogs come home much younger than the 10 weeks that the breeder insisted on with Riley (particularly those puppies acquired from the shelter) – requiring the owners to keep them in the house for several weeks before they can walk the mean streets of New York. In this case, pee pads are critical… but I would still use them judiciously.

I know we have had it pretty easy; Riley is the only puppy in obedience class who was house- and crate-broken when we started… and I’m pretty sure a few of the other owners are still having challenges – with puppies that are older than ours.  I’m relieved to say that Riley has had only a few accidents in almost 2 months – almost all of which were entirely our fault for not taking him out soon enough, or he was startled or unsure of himself. I actually did try pee pads once – I put one under the sherpa pad in the bottom of Riley’s crate, thinking it would be good to have it there in case he had an accident. But the accident was mine: he tried to eat it almost immediately.

I will say this: the pee pads are a great thing to have in the car on a rainy day; they worked really well when I had to walk him in the rain; I used the pads as towels to rub him down and dry him off. Given that they absorb 10+ times their weight, they’ve actually turned out to be quite useful in this respect – and less messy than wet towels!

Great gear!

When we brought Riley home, we thought we had “just the basics”… when, in actuality, we have a lot of stuff that we really didn’t need – or he shouldn’t have. So starting today, I’ll talk from time to time about the good, the GREAT, and the awful!

Collapsible Crate: Priceless! If you have a puppy, I suggest you buy for the size that the puppy will become… and it’s always good to double-check that it will fit into your vehicle before you buy it. The great news about this is that, when you’re done with it, it folds completely flat and can be easily stored.

ProSelect Gold Fold-down Crates

Most people just toss a blanket in – but I also bought a completely washable fleece crate liner that appears to be somewhat indestructible to puppy chewing… it means a trip to the laundromat (because it won’t fit in our apartment-sized washer) – but it’s been a great comfort and sometime diversion for the little guy. And you can order them in sizes that fit the crates!

If this crate was any more uncomfortable... I hate it (not)!

I cannot stress enough how important crating is – it’s been great for Riley because it gives him his own area, where he can feel secure – and gives me a break from having to watch him 24/7, too!  He was pretty much housebroken when we got him (at 10 weeks! Lucky us!), but this has helped reinforce the good behavior. When he’s in, he’s never had an accident!

In case you needed a close-up of cuteness...!!

News from the Fringe

I’ve heard that this breed can have a tendency to fixate… and the rug fringe has now become the latest in a long line of obsessions. So out comes another toy out of the magic bag… and voila! new obsession!

But how long will it last…???

come to me... you are getting sleepy... you will come out, mr. treat!

A new kinda bar fly…

11 Nov

Uncle Jim Holt arrives! We walk to the Boat Basin and Riley gets a barstool of his own. Much better to be up and part of the conversation, than sitting on the floor, waiting for people to pay attention to you!

Sharin the luv with Uncle Jim, the original luv machine!

A fair trade…?
